Based on information collected by TVA, Rock Creek’s water quality has not appeared to change much over the past 18 to 20 years. A February 2000 survey supported earlier conclusions that Rock Creek water quality is within acceptable ranges that will not limit aquatic life, however evidence of past coal mining in the watershed is indicated by elevated concentrations of iron, manganese and sulfate.

The February survey completed a year of quarterly testing funded by TVA that began in April 1999. Additional surveys were made in July and October.
Several sites within Rock Creek’s watershed were sampled for water quality analysis during each survey and ecological data were collected from one site to develop an Index of Biological Integrity for the creek. This environmental assessment rated Rock Creek in fair condition even though some aquatic insect and fish species associated with good conditions were found. Periodic low flows that limit riffle habitat and indications of stream sedimentation may have contributed to the "fair" assessment.

The Trust greatly appreciates TVA for developing this baseline knowledge of Rock Creek. We plan to continue these surveys and welcome others to get involved.
