by Bobby Davenport
Two major pieces of the High Point puzzle were filled in during the last twelve months. In October of 1999, the Lula Lake Land Trust bought 283 acres around the High Point area from Jim Garner, a Rome, Georgia, attorney.

In June of this year, the Land Trust closed on a 318-acre tract generously offered on a bargain basis by Mike and Meg Aiken. These two transactions fill two large holes in the Long Branch watershed in the shadow of the fire tower on High Point.

The Land trust also closed on a 12-acre tract next to Lula Lake Road near Thompsonville (near Eddie’s Quick Stop), which may provide additional access for recreational use at the High Point area.

This beautiful unspoiled valley is the centerpiece of the connection between the original gift of land from Robert M. Davenport that created the Trust and the future extension of Cloudland Canyon State Park.
