Through the AmeriCorps VISTA grant, Lula Lake Land Trust was able to craft free educational opportunities in nature's classroom - LLLT's very own Core Preserve. Since the organization started engaging students in 2015, over 10,000 students and community groups have visited the Core Preserve to learn about conservation, phenology (changes of the seasons), water quality derived by macroinvertebrates presence, environmental changes (pollution, erosion, and restoration), and how to identify flora and fauna centralized to the community area. Better yet, these 10,000+ visitors left the Core Preserve with a deep understanding of the importance of conservation, a self-awareness of their impact on the environment, and their ability to be good stewards for tomorrow.

It is through an immersive, educational experience that one comes to know and love the land. Experience, among other things, creates perspective, and to educate future generations who are environmentally aware is our collective duty. LLLT's small staff works hard to continue to provide free opportunities to students and community groups in the greater Chattanooga and Northwest Georgia areas. Support from donors and grant funding go a long way in providing more opportunities to students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to visit. David Sobel once wrote, "If we want children to flourish, to become truly empowered, let us allow them to love the earth before we ask them to save it." LLLT couldn't agree more. Investment in educating students not only introduces youth to their natural environment, most for the first time, but also introduces them to various opportunities and career paths available in the outdoor industry.
