Location: Lookout Mountain, TN/GA
Status: Seasonal, Full-time, Exempt (450-hour AmeriCorps National Service Term)
Stipend: $300 weekly (paid bi-weekly)
Position Description:
The Assistant Land Manager Intern will be responsible for assisting the land manager with the maintenance and management of approximately 4000 acres that comprise the Lula Lake Land Trust's private lands. The trust lands are natural environments, primarily forested and mountainous with an emphasis on promoting public recreation. The assistant land manager will be responsible for assisting the land manager with maintaining the Trust property while working with local landowners and partners in trail development efforts, coordinating education and research activities on land trust property.

The assistant land manager will be responsible for assisting the land manager with maintaining the Trust property while working with local landowners and partners in trail development efforts, coordinating education and research activities on land trust property.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Regular patrol of Trust properties to discourage trespassers and encroachment.
- Management of the property in accordance with the land management plans.
- Maintain points of access and boundaries on Trust properties.
- Perform routine property maintenance including bush hogging, mowing, weed whacking, road maintenance, culvert and ditch work, trail design and layout, mechanized trail construction, trail infrastructure construction (bridges, signage), removal of deadfall and down trees, maintenance of management areas and areas of concern, trash pickup, exotic species control/elimination, sign placement, boundary marking, equipment maintenance and erosion control.
- Assist with interpretive programs for educational groups, field trips, research projects, and special events in association with the Trust
- Manage and supervise Open Gate Days the first and last Saturday (occasional Sundays) of each month
- Assist with planning, organizing, and provide leadership during volunteer workdays and special events.

About Lula Lake Land Trust:
Lula Lake Land Trust (LLLT) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in January of 1994. Dedicated to the preservation of lands located within the Rock Creek watershed on Lookout Mountain, the mission of LLLT is to preserve the natural and historic landscapes surrounding Rock Creek and its tributaries through conservation, education, and low-impact recreation.
LLLT’s Core Preserve is only open to the public on the first and last weekends of each month during our Public Access Dates, or as we call them Open Gate Days. If you love the outdoors and are interested in spending a day or two a month at Lula Lake, an Open Gate Day staff position might be the job for you.
Position Description:
The Open Gate Day (OGD) Staff position is a part-time, contracted position, requiring a commitment of working at least two weekend days per month. OGD Staff are responsible for providing guests with excellent customer service, relaying information about our hiking trails, natural features, and our mission statement of conservation, education, and low-impact recreation.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Set up the merchandise table, open the gate, and check-in registered guests using an iPad.
- Direct guests where to park.
- Relay information to guests about suggested hiking routes, hand out maps, and answer any questions about the property while emphasizing Leave No Trace principles.
- Sell LLLT merchandise using an iPad.
- Conduct a sweep of the property towards the end of the day and notify guests when it’s time to leave.
- Check trash cans and stock supplies in the privies if needed.
- Follow emergency protocols in the case of an incident where a guest is injured.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident and provide documentation to support this.
- Must be 18 years old.
- Must be available to work at least one weekend per month.
- Must have reliable transportation to get to Lula Lake Land Trust.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Passionate about conservation, environmentalism, or outdoor recreation.
- Previous customer service experience.
- Knowledge of Leave No Trace principles.
- Comfortable utilizing an iPad to help with the check-in process and merchandise sales.
- Previous experience or comfortable driving an off-road utility vehicle.
- Ability to be flexible and work as a team.
- Occasional access to LLLT’s Core Preserve for hiking or mountain biking when it is typically closed (with permission from the Community Engagement Coordinator).
- A beautiful work environment which requires you to be outside all day.
- Knowing your work schedule months in advance.
